She deeded the house to Thomas Alva Edison, Inc. in 1943, which was then run by the Edison’s son Charles, with the understanding that the house would become a memorial to Edison after her death. In 1948, the Laboratory Complex was turned into a museum, but the house was not. The Edison Company used it for some company events. However, in 1955, Charles Edison donated the mansion and the lab to the National Park Service.

The estate was given to the federal government by the McGraw-Edison Company in 1959. The company and Edison’s children also donated the estate’s furnishings. Most of Glenmont’s fireplaces were seldom, if ever used, as the home’s central heating system did the job just fine.

Christie Street was the first street in the world to use electric lights for illumination. Edison subsequently left Menlo Park and moved his home and laboratory to West Orange in 1886. By 1870 his company was manufacturing his stock ticker in Newark, New Jersey.

Llewellyn Park is less than 20 miles from New York. In 1997, mandatory ten-digit dialing came to Edison with the introduction of Area code 732. Edison residents living on Roxy Avenue once again were in the spotlight in the news, with one side of the street served by the Rahway central office and the other side of the street is served by the Plainfield central office . Residents complained to the BPU and Bell Atlantic that it would be easier to yell across the street than dial a ten-digit number to call their neighbor across the street. From about 1888 thru 1958 those DC cables powered the mansion. With the passing of Glenmont into governmental stewardship in the late 1950s, new AC wiring finally replaced the old DC system. Remnants of that bygone DC era still can be seen in the basement of the mansion. In time however, he would grow into a more robust and highly motivated young man, essentially on his own by his early teenage years.
Theodore also did some private consulting on his own. The much talked about deafness of Edison is now interpreted as being most likely due to a congenital problem, or perhaps spurred on by early childhood illness. The name “Glenmont” is believed to be derived from the home’s proximity to a “glen” or ravine; while at the same time, the home sits on the apex of the “mount” of the property … hence the contraction Glenmont.

Over the years, Mina became an ardent conservationist and bird watcher. The lovely estate is planted with tree, and shrub species from around the world, still a wonderful delight when the seasons change. The operating greenhouse still exists on the estate and contains some of the descendants of the original plants dating back to the time of Edison.
